The Spey Casts

For a long time the Single and Double Spey's have been regarded as the traditional foundation casts in a salmon fishers armoury. If these casts could be performed both right and left hand up we had a safe and effective cast regardless of the bank we fished from and whatever wind conditions we encountered.

I would suggest that these two casts are still the most commonly used casts I see on the river today and in many circumstances you would need no others. That said, I came to the conclusion a long time ago that they are, at times, not the best casts available to us today for the different line densities and fishing situations we can find ourselves in.

Modern Spey casting offers today’s salmon angler a far greater variety of casts to choose from which when taught correctly are fairly easy to master. Casts like the Snake Roll and Circle Spey have at times advantages over the Double and Single Spey's and can make casting the Multi-Tip lines that are so popular today easier and more efficient.

Along with detailed descriptions and video footage of the casts I will describe the pros and cons of each cast and give examples of times when I would choose one over another. Sometimes there will be no obvious reason to change casts other than to say that some days I prefer tea to coffee, the point is, I know how to make both!
