If I was to choose just one word to describe the current situation with regard to Spey lines worldwide it would be minefield! Never before has the salmon fisherman had so many line profiles, head lengths and densities to choose from. Understandably this has lead to utter confusion and frustration for many anglers, just how many times someone has wasted £50+ on a fly line that doesn't match their rod amazes and saddens me. This situation more often than not isn't the fault of the angler, rather that of the tackle industry as a whole. Rods and Lines are given a rating based on a scale known as AFTM, a typical 15' salmon rod would commonly have a rating of 10 and therefore you should buy a line rated 10 and everything in the garden would be rosy! Sadly not. As I develop my site I will look at spey lines in great detail and cover them all from 30' shooting heads to 105' extreme long belly lines.
